Brian Wood – Lead Designer on Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor takes us through how the battle for the La Fière Causeway turned into a campaign:

Throughout World War II, there were numerous tales that took place that are often overlooked, because they were not part of the more well-known battles. However, these events are still significant because the soldiers fought just as hard--if not harder--and sacrificed much to ensure that the Allies would win the war. Causeway is one of those tales.

Story

As you already know, we've released quite a bit of information about the history of the fight for La Fière Causeway. We were deeply inspired by the stories of the 82nd Airborne's fight for Cauquigny and the surrounding area. However, war can get a bit impersonal when viewed through the lens of history. A battlefield can have a lot of data attached to it. Historians quote names, dates, casualties, statistics, and unit designations to give a "meaningful" description about a battle, making war sound very precise, mechanical and unemotional. To the average soldier, these numbers mean nothing. They do little to buffer him from the reality of his situation. It all comes down to two soldiers, each with a gun, intent on killing the other, and accepting that reality. At its core, Causeway is about that struggle.

In Causeway, you take on the roles of Able and Baker squad of the 82nd Airborne as they experience events surrounding the La Fière Causeway. Able squad, led by the brash Sgt. Wilson, is all about aggression and brutal force. If they aren't in the thick of battle, then Able squad isn't doing its job. Baker, led by Sgt. Craft, is more about subtle flanking tactics and accomplishing their objectives with a bit more caution.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Causeway is all about the juxtaposition between Able and Baker squads. Each squad has a completely different set of abilities and has specially crafted Company Commander upgrades that support their style of play.

To help differentiate Able and Baker further, they also employ Direct Fire for difference purposes. Able squad storms into battle mowing down the Axis soldiers with Sub Machine-guns, while Baker squad wields a Recoilless Rifle to neutralize enemy vehicles from afar. Not only did we want to enhance each squad with unique abilities, but we wanted to unlock abilities that would rock the Direct Fire experience. One Recoilless Rifle isn't enough? Upgrade Baker with another Rifle and gain direct control over TWO Recoilless Rifles! Able isn't dominating the battlefield? Upgrade your ammo clip size and Able can lay down a stream of bullets to waste charging Grenadiers.

Field Dressing

We've gone to lengths trying to make the Causeway Campaign very action-oriented. To support this we added a new feature called Field Dressing. What is Field Dressing? It's a special ability that becomes active when a squad member on the battlefield goes down; you can order one of your squadmates to patch him up and help him recover right amidst the combat to continue fighting! This is great for keeping the action moving, the combat heavy, and your squads alive and killing.

Conclusion

As you can see, we at Relic are always keen on trying out new ideas and applying new twists to old concepts. There's a lot more exciting content for you to experience in Causeway, and we just can't wait for you guys to get your hands on it and tell us what you think.

Special thanks to Relic Designer Darwin Yuen who helped me with writing this article.
