An important new feature of Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor are the multiplayer modes which we’re calling Operations. These are completely new to Company of Heroes and represent a different way of playing the game online with or against your friends. Tales of Valor will ship with three Operations. We have already talked about Stonewall, a brutal holdout against waves of invading forces, the second, which we’re talking about here on the community site is called Panzerkrieg.

Supports 2 – 6 players

Operation Panzerkrieg will test your skills at tank vs. tanks fighting and reveal a new arena of tactical warfare to be mastered. Set within an industrial themed map, six armored tanks crush their way onto the field of battle. These moving fortresses all represent the best in their class and strike fear into the hearts of their targets. None dare hold out against the might of the German Panzers, and none would ever deny the incredible tenacity of the Allied Armored Divisions. Two forces, both with their own brands of mechanical brutes will meet and determine once and for all whose steel is the strongest.

Each of the tanks that can be fielded for the Axis and Allied powers have a unique role, and include a unique commander tree where you can unlock increasingly powerful abilities. Need to lock down a point? Make sure you get your Panther the Site Main Gun ability to increase its range beyond that of any other tank. Combine that with the fast moving Hotchkiss and its mine laying ability and you have the start of a great defensive combination. Spend your Command Points wisely and you can rule the battlefield with an M18 Hellcat outfitted to be the ultimate tank hunter, or an ambush artist to guard vital sections of the map. A Hellcat that is in Ambush Lockdown is invisible to enemy tanks and only reveals itself once it fires its lethal rounds.

Victory is achieved by reducing your enemy’s Victory Points to zero. You can do this by destroying enemy tanks which costs the opposing team Victory Points or by controlling the Victory Points on the map, which will begin to draw points from your enemy’s total.

Holding Victory Points will grant you access to global abilities that could mean the difference between your survival and destruction. For example, the Radio Tower VP grants you access to a basic Recon Flight that helps your team by revealing a portion of the map which might hide potential dangers like a Panther lying in wait. More powerful abilities are unlocked the longer you hold these types of points, right up to the expensive but versatile Bombing Run if you’re an Allied player. Other Victory Points grant access to other kinds of abilities, such as calling in various types of infantry to support your team. Disrupting your enemy’s hold on such points will prevent them from being able to use these types of abilities that can swing the tide of battle.

Ultimately, understanding the resources available on a Panzerkrieg map is only half of the battle, executing group tactics with your fellow tank heroes is the other. A lone tank is a vulnerable tank, especially against a well coordinated team, so keep together and watch your corners. Quick to pick up and play, but difficult to master, Panzerkrieg will surely add a new dimension to Company of Heroes multiplayer.
