One of the most useful ways to streamline complicated orders is to use the shift key to queue multiple actions. This is used often for building defenses or capturing territory, but can also be used to retreat squads after specific actions. To queue a retreat one must click the retreat button, the hotkey, "T", while holding shift. Clicking the retreat button alone will cause selected squads to retreat immediately. The simplest application of this is when a squad that is capturing a key sector comes under fire. One can queue the retreat order so that as soon as they are finished capturing the sector they will retreat without requiring any attention. This is also incredibly useful for avoiding units that may be in the retreat path of a squad, or for retreating on the opposite side of an object (a hedge for example). Simply order the squad to move to the optimal location to retreat from, and cue the retreat. Many soldiers have been saved by the use of this trick. Ordering squads to pick up equipment or weapons and retreat is also highly useful as it ensues that the equipment will be stolen as safely as possible. Using abilities such as grenades or booby traps and retreating immediately after is another way to save time and manpower. When there is some spare time before a building needs to be built, a good player will queue some defenses and then a retreat, making the most of the time while the fuel is flowing in. This simple trick can save a lot of manpower over a game, and will save a player a considerable amount of time.
